Lady P~The Poet Comin' At Cha

Lady P has a lot to talk about with us today. Let's get to know her and see what we can find out!

BIO
Patrice “Lady P” Rivers is a college graduate of Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA.  She received her Bachelor’s of Arts in Mass Communications with a focus in print media.  As an author, poetess, writer and blogger, Lady P started her writing career at an early age of nine.  With her vivid and creative imagination, she started out writing short stories then as the years passed; her love for poetry became more passionate.  Writing has always been a part of Lady P and believed that it was a gift from God.  To seal the real deal, she published her first book “A Collection of God’s Word and Motivation” May 2012.  As Lady P continues her passion of writing poetry and stories, she hopes to succeed in what she does and attract people to love her art as well as she enjoys writing it.  Her second poetry book “A Thousand Words, A Thousand Hearts” will be published later on this year 2012

1.)    How do you get in the mental place where you find this deeper interior and write?

-When I write, whether it’s a poem or a story, I have to be really focused.  I like to have peace and quiet when I’m in my room writing.  I tried listening to music, but sometimes that distracts my mind from the creativity flowing from my heart.  Some days I write and some days I don’t, but when I am in that “poetic vibe” my mind turns into this imaginative/poetic machine and my words starts to flow on paper.  So mentally, I definitely have to be focused when my pen is bleeding hard on paper.

2.)    What kind of poems do you like to write?

-The type of poems that I like to write is love/romance, motivational, erotic and adventurous poems.  I want the audience to get a glimpse and taste of my writing on different types and levels of poetry.

3.)    How do you feel when people ask you if your poetry is about you?

-Honesty when people ask me that, I feel pretty honored in a way because a lot of my poems, especially my first book of poetry is mainly about my trials and tribulations I have gone through.   I want people to feel what I’m feeling.  I try to tell the story in my poems and encourage them at the same time.  Poems that I write/wrote that isn’t about me, I just paint an adventurous picture and go with the flow.  But majority of my poems are about me.  I can really get into it while writing.

4.)    What is your dream poetic place to write?

-Oh wow, that’s a very good question.  I have two places in mind actually.  The first dream poetic place I chose is on the roof top of a house because I can look up and see the stars and the moon at night.  It makes me feel more connected to my poetic vibe and then I can be able to flow with my pen and paper.  It feels romantic in a way.  The second place is a huge room that’s closed in and the walls are pink hearts that are cushioned.  So you’ll be able to press your cheek to it and let out a sigh of relief and comfort.  It will also have pink cushioned long chairs with pillows so you can stretch your legs and get comfy while writing.  It will be just me, my pen and paper; pure silence.

5.)     What inspires you to write?

-The creativity of my inner thoughts and vivid imagination inspires me to write.  I can be anywhere and ideas would start to flow in my mind.  I started writing at the age of nine and my parents were amazed at what I was capable of doing.  I started out writing short stories then at the age of fifteen, I began to write poetry.  So I just mainly continued my craft and passion of writing because I’m very creative and have a vivid imagination.

6.)    What do you feel is the future of poetry?

-This is a very deep question.  I would say the future of poetry will consist of the revelation of life and the reason why I say that is because some people are talking about what the afterlife would be like.  I feel that people will be writing about life events and what would happen in the near future.

7.)    What was your first favorite book?
Oh wow….honestly I don’t really remember my first favorite book because as a child I read so many.  However I used to love reading the series of The Baby-Sitters Club books and the Sweet Valley High Jr books.  Thinking about them now brings back great memories.  My grandmother would order them for me and I would kick back in my room and read away!

8.)    What do you want your audience to grasp from your work?
-I want my audience to understand the different types of poetry I write and the creativity spin I put on my poems.  As an artist, you have to be creative and let your mind wonder.  But I really want them to understand that I like to be free with my ink and I like my style to be unique.  Some people write about the same thing.  Anyone can write a simple love or exotic poem and make it sound good.  Good is ok, but you have to put a little bit more seasoning into it and write some twists and turns in it to make the reason wonder and get them really into it.  That’s what I like to do with my poetry; to try and think outside that box a little bit and explore Lady P’s creative side.

9.)    What are your plans for the future as a writer?
-My future plans as a writer is to continue to publish as many books as I can, to reach out to thousands of people by promoting myself and my work and as well as writing tons of poems that my audience would love.  I plan to continue to network with lots of authors and poets and just be the best me I can be.  Being an author and poet is very competitive because you have sooo much talent everywhere, so you just really have to push even harder so your voice can be heard.  As a first-time published author, I still have a lot of learning to do, but I’m happy I’m using my gift.  I thank God for that.

10.)   Do you perform your poetry at open-mics? If so when and where?
-I have never read my poems at any spoken word or open mic events before.  My main goal is to write the poems.  But, I am starting to look into it a little bit and try something different.  Honesty, I’m shy when it comes to reading my poems because I’m asking myself “Are they really going to like what I have to say?”  I’ve heard some good spoken word artists and they are really good.  I’m thinking about planning a spoken word/open mic event in my area at a restaurant and see how that goes.  It will give me a good opportunity to network with people that are poets and spoken word artists in my area.  I also thought about opening up my own business which is having my own poetry spot in Virginia.  This is all future planning and I will see how that will go.

Beautiful Flower

“This is an excerpt from my second book”

Fresh water from

The lips of the dew

Suckling the new life

The new birth of nature

Blossoming into a beautiful creature

That awaits new possibilities of a lullaby

Beauty sustain the inner soul

And the fullness of lips

That breathes a great pasture of positive energy

A beautiful flower she is budding from a tiny

Seed that’s planted in the center of her heart

Forever smiling into the sunlight

This reflects the beauty of her soul

A creature that was born into a world

Of hopes and dreams

Heart filled with gladness of another dimension

Living on cloud 9 where everything is calm

And at peace

She stands still and sits High as she is untouchable

A flower that everyone wants to cherish forever

From the beginning to the ending of existence til

Time stops ticking

Beautiful flower still grows and blossoms through

All the hell and high water

Showing her true colors that welcomes

The souls of everlasting

Her presence stays in the light always

Never fading in the dark skies nor rain

She’s a beautiful flower that remains

That still blossoms
